Celebrating Matt's life

Yesterday's celebration of Matt's life was a wonderful time of fellowship for all. Many tears were shed, much laughter was heard, and LOTS of hugs and stories were passed around!

I think Matt would have been surprised at the number of people who came to honor him. As Mark said, Matt was a simple man -- he may not have truly understood how much his friendship, his shy smile, and his sincere care and concern for others really impacted those he came into contact with.

Perhaps an easy way for us to honor Matt in the coming days is to pay it forward, in a sense. If we make the effort to look for the times when we can help others...hold open a door, help change a tire, give a friend a ride, make someone laugh...we are living what Matt proved each day: Showing others God's love in practical ways and having fun don't have to be mutually exclusive, but rather can actually be one-in-the-same.

Even in this season of grief and missing Matt, we have so much to be thankful for. I, for one, am thankful to have known Matt the gentleman, Matt the caregiver, and Matt the Redneck!

Happy Thanksgiving, ya'll --

It's still so unreal...it seems impossible to really understand and accept that such a young, fun, vibrant life is gone from us.

The Krause family is bearing up with such courage and conviction -- what a testimony to the strength of their family and the love they have for each other.

Praying God's peace and mercy for us all in the coming days,

Matt's final gift to others...

As further testimony of his compassion and love for others, a while back Matt had agreed to be an organ donor. Matt could have never known his life would be tragically cut short; however, his noble act will save or improve the lives of as many as 50 people!

Just thought you'd like to know...

Update - Friday, 11/20/09

In meeting with doctors earlier today, the Krause family was told that Matt’s injuries were more severe than originally thought. He was paralyzed from the neck down, and would require the use of a ventilator for the rest of his life. A short time later, Matt’s physical condition began to decline rapidly and the doctor’s were unable to resuscitate him.

Matt Krause went home to be with the Father at 3:48 pm this afternoon.

The family has asked that we allow them some time to be together without interruption so that they can begin to come to terms with the loss of their beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, and cousin.

Plans for a memorial service are underway and will be posted as soon as they are finalized.

Pray for the Krause family – pray for each other. Hug your family a little closer, a little tighter, and praise God for the precious gift we were all given to have known, loved, and been loved by Matt Krause.

“Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope.” (1 Thess 4:13)

Matt believed that Jesus died and rose again for him. He loved the Lord, and we WILL see Matt again. He has a new body in Heaven and has seen the face of Jesus. If you have questions about the truth of God’s love and the saving power of Jesus Christ, please ask...you can reach me at tracchristian@bellsouth.net or 770-630-7418.

Thank you, Lord!

Matt is resting quietly! He seemed to settle in a bit yesterday and last night, and his condition appears to be stable right now!

This morning, Mark referred to Matt’s current condition as “slow-cooking and simmering” when what we really want is a “microwave healing”. As friends and family, we know God is in charge of Matt’s life, it’s just hard to let things roll in God’s time rather than ours.

The meeting between the medical team and the Krause family did not happen yesterday because of scheduling difficulties. Although they will all gather together at some point, it is uncertain when it will happen.

Continue to pray for Matt’s healing. Lift up the Krause family, including their extended family members. The doctors and the nurses -- every person who comes into contact with Matt and his family -- are instruments of God. For now, our prayers are the best way we can stand in the gap for those who are weary and weakened by fear, grief, and regret.

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” (1 Peter 5:10)

Standing in the gap with you,

Thursday, 11/19/09

Friends,

Sadly, I must report that Matt’s condition continued to weaken throughout yesterday and overnight. The medical team is fighting valiantly to care for Matt in the best and most aggressive ways possible. The family will meet with the medial staff today, possibly during the early afternoon hours, to consider important care and treatment options.

The Krause family asks that today we specifically pray for unity, comfort, and that all parties, medical and family, will have the clarity of mind and soundness of hearts needed today.

Beloved, be vigilant today! Each time Matt or a member of the family comes to mind, take a moment to whisper their names to the Father…

Wednesday, 11/18/09

Dear Friends:

Because of the severity of the brain injury, Matt’s body is in a weakened and fragile state. Regrettably, Matt’s condition continues to be unpredictable; however, the Matt we all know and love is a strong fighter! According to Mark, yesterday was a tough day for Matt, but the doctors “threw the book” of medical options at him yesterday and were able to somewhat stabilize his condition.

Today will be a continuation of the watching and waiting process that inevitably comes with the types of injuries Matt has sustained. We, Matt’s family and friends, face the helpless feeling of wanting to do whatever it takes to help him; yet, we are left with the frustrating realization that all we can do is be still and pray. God has Matt wrapped securely in His arms and we must remain faithful in our petitions and prayers for recovery.

Today, more than ever before, it is urgent that we pray for Matt…pray for Mark, Nancy, Missy, and Nikki…

Tuesday, 11/17/09

Friends:

I am sad to report that Matt's condition deteriorated overnight. Matt remains in a medically-induced coma and on a ventilator, but the brain trauma he sustained is proving to be much more serious than they had originally thought. Matt's medical team feels it is in his best interest to hold off on any further treatment and surgeries to address his neck and spinal injuries. Although this puts on hold immediate attempts to restore feeling and movement below his waist, it is imperative that they allow his brain every opportunity to recover and heal, which will ultimately increase the chances for his survival.

Matt's situation is very unstable at this time. His body is fragile, his brain fighting to heal.
Mark's exact words were "Matt is a very sick young man -- we need immediate and unceasing prayers for him right now."

Mark and Nancy have once again asked that we honor their request to not call them or come to the hospital at this time. The hospital only allows two (2) family members at a time on the floor where Matt is being treated. Additionally, the unit Matt is in right now does not allow or receive any cards or flowers for patients or families.

Mark, Nancy, and the girls believe God will do a miraculous healing in Matt, and ask that we all pray toward that end. Here are the specific things for which they ask prayer at this time:

* Immediate and total healing for Matt's brain injury.
* Skilled hands and clear minds for the medical team that is treating Matt
* Emotional and Physical rest and peace for the family
* Physical comfort for Matt -- it's going to be a long road.

Feel free to call or e-mail me with questions or messages for the family. I'll make sure they get them! You can also leave posts here for the family.

Monday, 11/16/09

Matt Krause was involved in a serious automobile accident early Sunday morning, 11/15/09. He was ejected through the windshield of his vehicle. Rescue officials had him airlifted from the scene to Grady Hospital.

Matt sustained a massive head injury that required immediate surgery to remove a large blood clot from the right hemisphere of his brain. Sadly, his #6 and #7 cervical vertebrae were broken, crushing his spinal cord. As of right now he seems to have no feeling from the waist down.

Doctors have Matt in a medically-induced coma -- the reason for this is two-fold: 1) to keep him somewhat comfortable, and 2) to prevent him from fighting the ventilator that is helping him breathe. They did bring him briefly out of the coma just a bit, called his name, and he responded by moving his upper body. Praise God there seems to be a cognitive connection between his brain and his body! Doctors and the family are very encouraged that his brain seems to be responding.

Mark and Nancy covet our prayers! They have asked that we not call them or come to the hospital at this time. Once Matt's condition improves and he is moved to a room the hospital will allow visitors. Because he is on a critical care wardthere is simply no space to receive visitors. Also, Mark and Nancy are exhausted and using all of their energy for Matt -- it's important for us to honor this request. The unit Matt is in right now does not allow or receive any cards or flowers for patients or families. If you'd like to send them, cards and notes should all go to their home.

As you can imagine, Mark and Nancy are completely focused on Matt and his healing. Missy is with them and Nikki is on her way from her home to be with them, as well. Mark sounds strong and says that Nancy is holding up well. They believe God will do a miraculous healing in Matt, and ask that we all pray toward that end.

Mark asked me to be the "go between" to get information to you, their beloved church friends and family -- here are the specific things for which he asks prayer at this time:

* Continued healing for Matt's brain injury.
* Successful surgery on the broken vertebrae and rebuilding of Matt's neck.
* That his spinal injury will not be permanent.
* Physical comfort for Matt -- it's going to be a long road.

I'll update as information is available.
